The facades of the merchants houses on Sandhill are of seventeenth and eighteenth
century construction, though the other remaining structure may be older.
These timber framed houses are rare examples of domestic architecture of the Stuart
period .

Though part of the original building on the Guildhall site was destroyed by fire in 1639,
a new Guildhall and Exchange was commissioned on Sandhill in1655. This building was
substantially remodelled by William Newton and David Stephenson commencing in1794.
The distinctive semi circular, Ashlar masonry , addition at the east end of the Guildhall
was added by John Dobson in 1823.

Painting size 495mm x 330mm, 2001.
