Built in 1836-1838 as part of the Richard Grainger’s redevelopment of the city centre
Clayton Street was designed by John Wardle and George Walker. Clayton Street is
constructed in ashlar masonry to a much simpler design than the remainder of Richard
Grainger’s town centre redevelopment. Above shops on the ground floor are two further
floors separated by projecting horizontal string courses.

The former Northern Goldsmiths building occupies a prominent corner site, the prominence of which is emphasized with a corner turret topped with a larch copper clad dome. The distinctive projecting gold
coloured, Northern Goldsmiths clock adds to the prominence of the corner turret.

Painting size 515mm x 330mm, 2011.
