Though part of the original building on the Guildhall site was destroyed by fire in 1639,
a new Guildhall and Exchange was commissioned on Sandhill in 1655. This building
was substantially remodelled by William Newton and David Stephenson commencing
in 1794. The distinctive semi circular, ashlar masonry, addition at the east end of the
Guildhall was added by John Dobson in 1823.

The famous Tyne Bridge was built in 1925-1928 to a design by Mott Hay Anderson.
It is a small version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was designed by the same
engineers, and commenced, but not completed until 1932. The single, two-hinged steel
arch spans the river over a distance of 163metres. The prominent ashlar masonry towers
were designed bylocal Architect R.Burns Dick and are modeled on ancient Egyptian
temple entrances.

Painting size 515mm x 330mm, 2011.
